The Importance of Eating a Good Breakfast!

As we rest overnight out bodies are ‘fasting’, hence that could be a good 7 plus hours without food.  By not having breakfast you will negatively affect your concentration levels, your mood and even your weight maintenance.  By 11am I’d imagine you’d be very hungry and much more likely to overeat, make bad choices and consume more calories as a result.

So the benefits of eating a nutritious breakfast!

You will have increased energy, better concentration as well as steady blood glucose levels and a boost in your metabolic rate (by 10% apparently).

Why is this?

When you sleep your body slows because it has fewer requirements.  Starting the day with breakfast initiates thermogenesis, which is the metabolic process of digesting and transporting food.

Individuals who eat a nutritious breakfast are reported to have a lower BMI and a higher diet quality overall.

WHAT you eat is also important!

Try to eat ‘real food’ at breakfast.  Include some protein, fibre and healthy fats (think avocado, nuts, Greek yoghurt are just some examples).  This will help maintain steady energy levels.  You should find that come 11am you’ll not be craving that sugary/carb snack that you often go for!

It is also important to point out that most of the ‘healthy cereals’ out in the supermarkets are not the best breakfast option.  Always check the ingredients on the packaging and don’t fall for the marketing or whatever it claims to be (same goes for the adverts on TV).  If you are a cereal fan, you’d be better off making your own homemade muesli or porridge with a dollop of protein on top!  (ie. nuts, oatmeal porridge is good etc..)

I hope this has made you more mindful of why we should eat breakfast like a King!
